The Borrowed and Blue Murders The Zoe Hayes Mysteries Book 4 edition by Merry Jones Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This Zoe Hayes book has the perfect combination of love and murder. The love story is very 'real world' and keeps you just as engaged as the thriller part. Jones does a great job of jamming in mini plots while keeping the story simply exciting!
I had read previous books in this series and liked them well enough to pick up this one. I finished reading it only to find out how much more preposterous it could get. None of the characters behaved in a believable way, and the plot had enough going on for two or three separate books. A real disappointment from an author I have enjoyed.
This fast paced and nicely plotted mystery features an intriguing protagonist who has a young infant and an imminent marriage to the cop she loves. If that isn't enough to keep her going, she's faced with several murders and three of the groom's brothers, who take over her house. This book was a trip into the mind of a woman juggling everything in order to make things work, even as murder and mayhem explodes around her. And Merry Jones made this story work, and work nicely at that!
I picked up a Zoe book in the library having not read any before. I enjoyed the book and have now read all four and will read any more that come out. I must say, though, that the only character I find the least bit mature in these books is Molly, the 5 year old. Zoe seems like she has serious mental problems connecting with reality. It never occurred to her that her daughter might just possibly be feeling neglected when a new baby arrives and no one pays the least bit of attention to her then. Her fiance, Nick, is a lying ass who lets his family walk all over her and I can't for the life of me figure out why she marries him. And her best friend, whose name escapes me (Susan?) is such a pain in the butt control freak that I would run, not walk to get away from her. That being said, I will still get a new Zoe book is one comes out. It's fascinating to see how she can possible screw up any more.
After postponing the wedding due to a high risk pregnancy, art therapist Zoe Hayes is in the final countdown to saying I do. Although she is run off her feet, she remains relatively calm as she deals with an upset hyperactive wedding planner and dodging her boss at the Psychiatric Institute. Her home is taken over by her fiancé's two brothers Tony and Sam, who look almost exactly like her beloved. She does not mind them monopolizing her home and her fiancé Detective Nick Silver, but she wishes they would include her in their discussions.
Zoe's tranquility is shattered when she discovers a gutted woman on her patio. The police think it was a drug deal that turned hideous as the suppliers worked her over to get to illegal contraband inside her stomach. That theory goes down in flames when the victim is identified as a Homeland Security Agent who Tony recognizes as the woman who bumped into him.
The forth Zoe Hayes mystery is hilarious as it is fun to watch the heroine jump from one crisis to another while also dealing with post partum depression, bridal anxiety disorder, caring for a disorderly baby, and trying to fit in with Nick's eccentric family. Readers are interested in the goings on of the cast as it seems everyone seeks something from everyone else even the dead agent. Chaos is the norm for Zoe and the guys while humor and excitement is the norm for readers.

Unless you like reading long, long murder mysteries (97 chapters long) I will suggest you open up two more murder mysteries (of the usual length - 25-35 chapters) to read along side this one. For me life is too short to allow one book (NINETY SEVEN chapters long) to take up my precious time, when there are so many new novels, of decent length, to read. I am very surprised that her editor/publisher didn't talk her into doing major length editing. When I finally finish this novel, and I'm only up to chapter 8, I will write a review. But reading one, possibly two chapters a day, won't hurry things along. I really wish I had looked over her chapter list before buying this book.
I finally finished this book and it was fairly good, but I have to tell you that I read, Hot Schemes (murder mystery) and Sacred Liturgy (dense, dense, dense) at the same time and finished these two books before finishing The Borrowed and Blue Murders book. There were chapters in The Borrowed and Blue Murders' book that could have been eliminated because their content did not move the story along. I speed read thru these chapters and I do mean flipped through those pages. In this era of instant messaging, I can understand why she chose to hide the contents section in her e-book rendition. So take a clue, if an e-book's contents section is hidden (locked) then the book is way too long for today's readership.
An awesome book; couldn't put it down till I read the entire book! Held my attention like I was spellbound! If you want something different, this is for you!!
